How to Wash a Heated Gilet Without Damaging It: The Ultimate Care Guide

by GOKOZY Team on Jun 17, 2026

Heated gilets have become a winter staple across the UK—from morning commutes and dog walks to outdoor work and weekend hikes. But unlike your regular fleece or puffer, a heated gilet contains delicate heating elements that need proper care. One wrong wash and you could end up with a very expensive piece of ordinary clothing.

The good news? Washing your heated gilet safely is simple once you know the rules. In this guide, we'll walk you through exactly how to clean yours without damaging the heating system, so it stays warm, fresh, and ready for every cold snap.

Before You Wash: The 60-Second Pre-Wash Checklist

Skipping these steps is the number one cause of damaged heated clothing. Take a minute before every wash:

  • Remove the battery pack. This is non-negotiable. Even if the battery is marketed as waterproof, never submerge or machine-wash it. Unplug it carefully and set it aside.
  • Check the pockets. Make sure you haven't left anything in them—coins, keys, or tissues can damage the internal wiring during a spin cycle.
  • Zip up all zippers. Open zippers can snag on fabric and tug at the heating panels. Zip every pocket and the front closure.
  • Read the care label. Every heated gilet is slightly different. GOKOZY gilets are machine-washable, but always confirm the recommended water temperature and cycle type on your garment's tag.

Step-by-Step: How to Machine-Wash a Heated Gilet

1. Use a Laundry Bag

Place your gilet inside a mesh laundry bag before it goes anywhere near the machine. This prevents the garment from twisting, stretching, or rubbing against zips and buttons from other items. It's the simplest £3 investment you can make to protect your heated gear.

2. Choose the Right Detergent

Stick to a mild, liquid detergent. Avoid bleach, fabric softener, and stain removers with harsh chemicals—these can degrade the waterproof coating and irritate the heating elements over time. If in doubt, less is more.

3. Set the Correct Cycle

Select a gentle or delicate cycle with cold or lukewarm water (30°C max). High temperatures and aggressive spin speeds are the enemy of internal wiring. A slow spin at low temperature cleans just as effectively without the risk.

4. Wash Alone or with Similar Fabrics

Ideally, wash your gilet on its own. If you must add other items, keep it to soft, lightweight garments like base layers or t-shirts. Avoid jeans, towels, or anything with metal hardware that could cause friction.

Drying: The Most Important Step

This is where many heated gilets meet an untimely end. The rule is simple: never tumble dry a heated gilet.

  • Air dry only. Lay the gilet flat on a drying rack or hang it on a padded hanger in a well-ventilated area, away from direct heat sources like radiators or heaters.
  • No wringing. Gently press out excess water with a clean towel—don't twist or wring the fabric, as this can shift or damage the heating elements.
  • Wait until completely dry. Make sure every part of the gilet is fully dry, including the inner pockets and connector port, before you reconnect the battery and use it again.

What You Should Never Do

  • Don't dry clean. The chemicals used in dry cleaning can corrode the heating elements and strip waterproof coatings.
  • Don't iron. Direct heat from an iron can melt the internal wiring insulation. If your gilet is creased after washing, hang it in a steamy bathroom instead.
  • Don't use fabric softener. It coats the fibres and reduces breathability, and can interfere with the heat distribution across the heating zones.
  • Don't wash with the battery connected. Even a momentary lapse can destroy the battery and potentially damage the gilet's connector port.

How Often Should You Wash a Heated Gilet?

Less than you might think. Because heated gilets are typically worn over a base layer, they don't need washing after every use. Aim for every 8–12 wears, or when it starts to look or smell like it needs a refresh. Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth between washes to keep it fresh longer.

Storing Your Gilet Between Seasons

When spring finally arrives in the UK (usually around late May if we're lucky), store your gilet properly to keep it in top condition for next winter:

  • Wash and fully dry it before storing.
  • Charge the battery to around 50–60% before storage—storing it fully drained or fully charged can shorten its lifespan.
  • Fold the gilet gently (don't crease the heating zones) and store in a cool, dry place.
  • Keep the battery separate, in a dry location at room temperature.

FAQs

Can I wash my heated gilet in a washing machine?
Yes—all GOKOZY heated gilets are machine-washable. Just remove the battery, use a laundry bag, and stick to a cold or 30°C gentle cycle.

What happens if I accidentally tumble-dry it?
High heat can melt the insulation around the heating wires and cause permanent damage. If your gilet has been through the tumble dryer, inspect it carefully before use. If anything smells burnt or the heating doesn't work evenly, stop using it and contact support.

Can I hand-wash instead?
Absolutely. Hand-washing in cold water with mild detergent is even gentler. Rinse thoroughly and press out water with a towel before air-drying.

Will washing affect the heating performance?
Not if you follow the care instructions. GOKOZY heating elements are designed to withstand regular machine washing when cared for correctly.

Keep the Heat Going

A heated gilet is one of the best investments you can make for staying warm during the UK's long, damp winters. Treat it right, and it will keep you cosy season after season. The care routine takes a few extra minutes—but it's the difference between a gilet that lasts three winters versus one that barely makes it through a single cold snap.
